Conservación creativa aplicada a las huellas de saurópodo de Mas de Romeu (Morella) en la 1st International Conference HeriCC

Durante el 1st International Conference HeriCC: Heritage, Conservation and Creativity celebrado en Tomar (Portugal) del 9 al 10 de octubre de 2024, el equipo de conservación del Grupo de Biología Evolutiva ha presentado una comunicación titulada "Creative conservation applied to the footprints of sauropod and a dinosaurs fosil site at Mas de Romeu ("Old Road from Morella to Xiva". Morella, Castellón, Spain)". La comunicación ha versado sobre las propuestas innovadoras para la conservación y difusión del patrimonio paleontológico y cultural de la zona de Mas de Romeu (Morella, Castellon).

Entre las principales propuestas se encuentra la ampliación de la ruta turística del "Camino Viejo de Morella a Xiva", integrando tecnologías como la realidad aumentada y códigos QR para mejorar la experiencia educativa y turística. Además, se plantea la participación de estudiantes locales en la conservación, fomentando la concienciación y el desarrollo de actividades interactivas como la instalación de siluetas de dinosaurios, que podrán ser intervenidas por los visitantes, y competiciones de land art, reforzando la conexión entre el patrimonio y la comunidad. Esta investigación subraya la importancia de aplicar un enfoque creativo y accesible, no solo para proteger el patrimonio, sino también para enriquecer el turismo cultural y educativo en la región. The town of Morella, located in the Els Ports region of Castellón, Spain, is renowned for its historical, cultural, and paleontological significance. It features notable historical monuments, including a medieval castle, ancient walls, a Visigothic settlement, and several churches. The town is also home to cultural landmarks like the Morella la Vella cave paintings, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Vallivana. Paleontologically, Morella have been crucial for the study of Lower Cretaceous vertebrates on the Iberian Peninsula. The Arcillas de Morella Formation has produced fossils of significant dinosaurs, including Morelladon, Garumbatitan, and Vallibonavenatrix. These discoveries are displayed in the local "Temps de Dinosaures" museum. The Mas de Romeu locality, actively excavated since 2016, has revealed remains of a large sauropod dinosaur and also a tracksite with dinosaurian footprints. These sites, located near the historic "Camino Viejo" route, offers educational potential for both paleontology and heritage conservation. The dry-stone walls near the sites, declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, add further cultural value. To enhance Morella's cultural tourism, a project proposes expanding the "Camino Viejo de Morella a Xiva" by integrating natural and cultural heritage elements, including fossils, footprints, and historical structures. Virtual technologies like augmented reality and QR codes are suggested to provide interactive learning experiences. Involving local students in the conservation of these sites fosters awareness of heritage preservation while enriching the local economy and education. Heritage conservation ensures future generations can appreciate and learn from these legacies, boosting social cohesion and cultural memory.
