En dicho espacio, Javier Salas Herrera y colaboradores presentaron el trabajo “Assessment of computational modelling of a limping styracosternan from the Arcillas de Morella Formation (Castellón, Spain) and comparison with other ornithopods”.
Locomotor reconstruction in extinct vertebrates is one of the most widely studied fields of applied biomechanics within paleobiology. Among the non-avian dinosaurs, styracosternan ornithopods are one of the clades which offers a wide range of potential biomechanical reconstructions, due to the variation in its posture throughout its ontogenetic development and the extensive fossil footprints record. The fossil sites of Morella (Province of Castellón, Spain) represent some of the most important European localities for the study of these dinosaurs. In this study, a computational model was used to estimate muscular moment arms and ranges of motion for a styracosternan ornithopod individual with an anomalous pelvic configuration from the fossil site of Mas de la Parreta Quarry (CMP-5). The virtual skeleton was assembled in the modelling software Blender, the myological configuration was developed using MuSkeMo, a new open-source addon which allows to translate three-dimensional scans to biomechanical information, while the analysis and simulations linked to the gait reconstruction were made in OpenSim. The analytical workflow was replicated and compared with 3D models of the pelvic girdle and hindlimbs of others styracosternans, as the holotype of Iguanodon bernissartensis, the holotype of Mantellisaurus atherfieldensis and a sub-adult Edmontosaurus annectens, scaled relative to the holotype of the species. The results of this study will allow the formulation of hypotheses about functional changes that occurred as a consequence of a pathological condition affecting a key element in the biomechanics of a styracosternan, potentially affecting locomotor performance and gait mechanics.
